How Artists Can Give Back on GivingTuesday

If you’re looking for ways to help communities in need during the holiday season, Threadless Causes makes it simple for artists and their supporters to give back on GivingTuesday and beyond.

How does it work? This Artist Shops feature enables artists to donate a portion of their proceeds from any design in their shop to a Cause and charity of their choice. When those designs sell, Threadless matches the donation and sends it directly to the organization.

With participating artists around the world, Threadless Causes continues to make a impact:

  • $676,000+ donated since 2020
  • 56 charities supported across nine Causes
  • 4,400+ participating Artist Shops
  • 30,800+ Causes designs created

With GivingTuesday coming in late November, Threadless Causes can help you celebrate the annual tradition of radical generosity. Since 2012, GivingTuesday has inspired people to give back to charitable causes on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. It’s a way of shifting focus away from obsessive holiday shopping to philanthropic efforts.

Keep reading for tips on how you as an artist can give back on GivingTuesday. Start planning now so you can share a meaningful message that resonates with your followers.

1. Focus on a Cause and charity you believe in.

GivingTuesday is an opportunity for you to raise awareness on issues that are near and dear to you. At Threadless, there are nine different umbrella Causes with their own list of charities you can support with designs in your Artist Shop. Those Causes include:

  • Racial Injustice
  • Suicide Prevention
  • Mental Health Awareness
  • Humanitarian Aid
  • Pride/LGBTQIA+
  • Human Rights
  • Community
  • Environment
  • Animals
"Spread Kindness" by Dragon Doodle Art
Dragon Doodle Art donates 100% of their proceeds from their design, “Spread Kindness,” to the nonprofit UNICEF. Artists can set the exact percentage of their earnings to donate.

Once you’ve found a Cause and charity with a mission you support, follow these instructions to set up donations in your shop. The top five charities that have received the most donations are:

  1. Medshare (Humanitarian Aid)
  2. Fair Fight (Human Rights)
  3. Black Lives Matter (Racial Injustice)
  4. The Trevor Project (Pride/LGBTQIA+)
  5. World Wildlife Fund (Environment)

The designs you choose to donate earnings from don’t necessarily have to be related to the Cause you’re supporting. However, if they are, your art will help create an even greater sense of urgency around important issues as you celebrate GivingTuesday.

2. Get the message out to your followers.

Rally your fan base around a Cause with a social media post about your design and the charity you’re supporting on GivingTuesday. Explain why you chose to donate to the organization and the critical work it does in communities throughout the word.

Here’s a great example of how you can promote your Threadless Causes designs on Instagram. Shop owner Sophie McTear shares a personal story related to the Cause and mentions how 50% of the proceeds go to Trans Lifeline.

DON’T FORGET TO…

  • Use the hashtag #GivingTuesday to make your post easier for non-followers to find.
  • Provide a link to the Causes design in your shop.
  • Tag the charity you’re supporting.
  • Ask your followers to reshare the post.

3. Make a direction donation to a nonprofit.

This is one of the most impactful ways you can give back on GivingTuesday. Direct donations are quick and enable nonprofits to continuing making a difference, whether they’re combating mass incarceration like The Bail Project, restoring endangered species like Defenders of Wildlife, or leading conversations on suicide prevention like Hope for the Day.

If you have the means to donate and are looking for an organization to support, the Threadless Causes Help Page includes links to 56 incredible organizations on a mission to change the world for the better.

4. Get involved in your community.

Everyone has something to contribute! No act of generosity is too small. Volunteer for a food bank, help your elderly neighbors with their yard work, cheer up a loved one, tell essential workers how much you appreciate them.

The official GivingTuesday website lists tons of great ways we as individuals can uplift our own communities.

Our team at Threadless Artist Shops is excited to see how artists light up the holiday season with their kindness and generosity.
